WORKS has had the pleasure of creating, conceptualizing, producing, and activating the new mascot for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. Focusing on the power of three, JIP’s creation was influenced and led by the culture and values of the 3 host countries: Japan, Indonesia and Philippines. We created an Origin Story routed in the digital world of gaming and instant messaging, yet one that tied back to the environment - educating young generations of fans about recycling and our social responsibility as a nation.
From this came our mascot, a mascot that not only celebrates the sport of Basketball, but one that is a beacon of responsibility for our planet and a source of education, entertainment, and interaction for children, young people, and adults alike.
To tell the story of JIP we created a launch video that tells the story of its creators, its conception, and its mission.
To further bring the character to life, we created a set of animated stings to be used on social media and digital screens at events and games. Highlighting the mascot's mission, these stings add cultural references from the three host countries and expand more and more on JIP's story.
For the first time in the Basketball World Cup's history, a dedicated microsite for the mascot was created - a fan hub for JIP's story and a place filled with web apps and interactive & downloadable content. This digital hub created further scope to activate campaigns and grow traction prior to the event.
On launch in June 2022, a global campaign to name the mascot was delivered through the microsite. This had an amazing response with an unrivaled majority in favour of the name JIP.
A full suite of Social Media static and animated stickers were produced across various platforms including: Line, Whatsapp, Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook.
